Finishing Chemo with a Cake from Candice
Kenny finished chemo and received a celebratory cake from Sugar Angel Candice Simeoni. Learn more about what being involved with Icing Smiles means to her.
As a Sugar Angel, Candice Simeoni uses her passion for baking to help critically ill children and their families celebrate special occasions. Despite it being during the week, Candice chose to answer this call to action for a cake for Kenny, a little boy celebrating the end of his chemo treatments at the beginning of March. Candice used her talents to create a beautiful Cars-themed dream cake for Kenny, but she also went well above the call of duty.
Above and Beyond
Candice rallied her friends and family to make this celebration extra special for the whole family. After all, when a child is going through chemotherapy or battling a chronic illness, the entire family goes through that experience. Finishing chemo treatments is worthy of a big celebration, and Candice helped ensure the entire Alexander family was on the receiving end of something special. Between gift cards for the family and extra presents for Kenny, Candice wanted to ensure that the whole family was involved when celebrating this milestone. “Bringing some joy in the lives of families whose days haven’t been as joyful or as easy as others moves me,” she says.
Candice is a parent and knows the love she feels for her child as well as the pain of worry. “Even though these cakes are for children, my goal is to make the parents feel a sense of joy and support as well,” she says. She aims to provide more than a cake for those going through a difficult time due to critical illness.

Candice shared some words with us about what being a Sugar Angel means to her:
“This one touched me. They all do. I generally don’t take on cakes during the week, but I couldn’t say no. I’m so proud to be a part of this program. I believe we are connected to each other for a reason. It takes a village.”
More Than Cake
A lot of our Sugar Angels have mentioned that being involved with Icing Smiles provides them with joy and a gratitude to be able to give back. They often share that meeting the families and the recipients of their cakes can make a lasting impression. Candice is no different.
“I’ve scheduled an appointment to give blood in my new little buddy’s honor,” Candice says. “My soul is refueled with every cake.”
Whether it’s a love of baking, knowing someone with a critically ill child, or the desire to help others, most Sugar Angels have their own reasons for volunteering for Icing Smiles.
