Unicorn Power! Sophia’s Special Birthday Cake

Sophia has a lot in common with unicorns. They sparkle, they shine, and they are very unique. When Sophia was beginning to walk, her parents noticed she was a bit unsteady on her feet. Multiple doctors assured them that this was something that she would outgrow with time, as is the case with most children. As time went on, the walk persisted, which prompted her parents to seek out another opinion.

Sophia’s family soon found out that she had a condition called Ataxia Telangiectasia (AT). There are only about 500 cases of AT in the country, making it so rare that most doctors may never encounter a case. AT causes a weakened immune system and a progressive deterioration of motor function. It is often hard to catch until a child starts walking, as it doesn’t impact any of the early milestones. 

Living with this condition has made Sophia and her family grateful for every day, especially birthdays! Icing Smiles was happy to help Sophia celebrate turning six with a unicorn cake created by Gabrielle Vitrano that truly matches her personality.
