Eden Beats the Odds

Eden Beats the Odds

Happy-go-lucky Eden was born with Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards Syndrome. Trisomy 18 is a chromosomal abnormality where a child is born with an extra copy of chromosome 18 and has three copies total of chromosome 18 (“tri”=three). This extra chromosome causes a disruption in development and can also be life-threatening. Similarly, Down’s syndrome, Trisomy 21, is from an extra copy in chromosome 21.

Due to Trisomy 18, Eden has a weakened immune system and also heart and lung disease. Eden can only eat through a G-tube, but can taste by mouth so she was able to taste her yummy cake!

This little fighter was given only 3 months to live. She made it through 2 open heart surgeries before she was one. She has had surgery on both hips and anticipates at least two more future surgeries on her legs.

Although Eden cannot speak and is wheelchair-bound, she never lets these obstacles get in her way of going to school and making new friends, which she loves to do. On May 4th, Eden continued to beat the odds and celebrated her 7th birthday! Heather Horton of Sweet Designs Cakery created a Dr. Who TARDIS cake that brightened Eden’s day and made her birthday the best day ever!

Thank you to our Sugar Angels and to Icing Smiles for such an amazing cake.
