Baker Spotlight: Meet Carla Evans

Behind the Sugar: Blog Edition

Today we are excited to share our interview with the talented Carla Evans of Oh, For Goodness Cakes! in Lexington, Kentucky who donated a cake for 4 year old Jolon who is undergoing treatment for Burkitts Lymphoma.

“I can’t think of a more worthwhile thing to do with my baking and artistic abilities. It’s incredibly humbling to be a part of these families’ special days. It’s amazing to me to see the amount of happiness a cake can bring,” said Carla when asked what she has enjoyed the most about volunteering. She read about Icing Smiles and instantly wanted to be a part of our organization! “Cakes are happy! Icing Smiles makes sick children and their families happy. I wanted in on that! I filled out the Icing Smiles Sugar Angel application and was thrilled when I found out they had accepted me!”

Carla spent many hours watching every cake show on the Food Network. She became fascinated with cake decorating and convinced herself that she indeed could do it. She started looking online for information that included tutorials, pictures, cake classes, and groups. She had a very small home business and as she got more confident in her skills, she knew she wanted to share more of herself with others in need.

Which is awesome because we reached out to Carla to create a Paw Patrol inspired dream cake for 4 year old Jolon who was undergoing treatment for Burkitts Lymphoma. Unfortunately his birthday party was postponed as he was hospitalized just days prior to his scheduled event, however, the party was rescheduled and Carla accepted the challenge once again! Carla said, “There really wasn’t much coming up with a design on this one. I knew right away I wanted to sculpt Chase for Jolon. I searched for a tutorial and found a great one by Paw Patrol Structure

So how exactly does one go about creating these 3D Paw Patrol inspired cakes? Carla says, “The cakes are sitting on a wooden board topped with a foam core board, secured with two 1/2″ wooden dowels. Each dogs body was made of four 8″ and three 6″ cakes. The heads were constructed using a ball cake pan. The bottom half of the ball was krispie treat. The top half was cake. The faces were formed using candy clay. The whole thing was covered in ganache; chocolate for Chase, white chocolate for Marshall.” Jolon’s favorite cake flavor was chocolate, however, Marshall was vanilla cake with chocolate spots on the inside!

Paw Patrol CakesWhen asked for any additional comments regarding Jolon and his family Carla shared, “Jolon is all boy and every bit a 4 year old! He reminded me so much of my own sons when they were little. A bit overwhelmed by the extra attention at first but he warmed up to us.” Carla also shared that her brother is a Lieutenant with the Lexington Fire Department. They all thought what better way to present Jolon’s cake than to have some of the men at Station 5 deliver it! I know Jolon was amazed and his family was overjoyed with happiness!

Thank you for bringing a BIG smile to Jolon’s face Carla! We are so excited to have you as a Sugar Angel and look forward to seeing more “smiles” from you in the future!
