Baker Spotlight: Meet Barbarann Kym

Behind the Sugar: Blog Edition

Today we are excited to share our interview with the talented Barbarann Kym of Cake Rhapsody in Kent, WA who donated two cakes for siblings Madsyn and Odin!

Aside from the ingredients, filling, and frosting, what goes into making a cake so breathtaking? LOVE! Without a doubt, our baker of the month, Barbarann Kym, portrays that in each and every cake she makes.  Simply look at a photo of one of her cakes and you will feel the love she poured into it.

For Barbarann providing a dream cake is a true privilege. “These are not just cakes, they are a bright spot…a lasting happy memory and even a bit of ‘normalcy’ for just a day”, says Barbarann.  To date, Barbarann has donated four dream cakes.

Cake by Barbarann KymBarbarann was inspired to join Icing Smiles because 4 of her 5 kids were born extremely premature and with special needs.  Just like our medical families, Barbarann spent several years celebrating with very different milestones than a parent of a healthy child. These milestones consisted of things like special stickers getting placed on one of her kids isolate for finally reaching 2 pounds or finally weaning off a ventilator.

Days, weeks, months, and years were spent going in and out of hospitals and their living room was filled with machines, feeding tube equipment, and oxygen tanks.  With first-hand experience, she knows how exhausting and overwhelming it can be for a family.

Cake by Barbarann KymBarbarann felt like she could really make a difference, even if it is a small difference. Knowing she had the ability to help a family have something to look forward to makes it so special.  Barbarann says she “is blessed to have the opportunity to give back one colorful, delicious, edible creation at a time”.

Barbarann is the owner of Cake Rhapsody in Kent, WA and has battled it out on the Food Network on Halloween Wars and Sugar Dome.  She has even creeped us out with her cakes on her show Freaky Sweets on the Food Network. Barbarann looks forward to whatever her TV journey holds.
